ARRA funds have an expiration date. No – really. If you have a PI that thinks their ARRA award is going to last for five years, they are sadly mistaken. PI’s need to inform their funders by June 1, 2012 of their plans to fully spend their grants by September 30, 2013, or meet very stringent scientific criteria for why they need to keep their funds. (In which case, you have to wonder why they received them in the first place!) The OMB is auditing all ARRA awards granted by the Federal Government to ensure the maximum economic stimulus – and they have generated these guidelines to ensure that a majority of the funds are spent. Warn your PI’s – the end of the ARRA is near.
